Enhancing the Quality of Civic Buildings with Acoustics

We develop cost-effective solutions for municipal projects in order to create safe, quality facilities. By designing these buildings with both noise control in critical spaces and good room acoustics in gathering spaces, we can greatly enhance the quality of the facility and the comfort of its occupants. Our range of federal project experience includes institutional facilities, police stations and headquarters, maintenance faciilities, and courthouses and city halls.

Designing for good speech intelegibility and appropriate sound and vibration isolation involves the following:

Architectural Acoustics
Interior noise design criteria, appropriate for the project’s concept and budget, are established within the critical spaces. This criteria is used to develop our standards and solutions. We select specific wall and ceiling details for acoustical privacy, depending on the sensitivity of the room. We calculate reverberation times within common spaces, and review floor systems for impact insulation.

Mechanical Noise Control
We review noise from the HVAC system, including radiated noise through the roof ceiling assembly and ducted noise.

Vibration Isolation
Mechanical equipment is also reviewed for vibration impact to the building. For sensitive labs, we design recommendations on how to isolate the space from the structure to prevent excessive vibration levels.
